Archive: Senate Votes to Extend Mcare

(This article is from the Pennsylvania Medical Society's website archives.)

The state Senate voted 38-9 Wednesday, Sept. 28, in favor of a bill that would amend the Mcare Act of 2002 to delay the phase-out of the Mcare Fund for six more years.

Later in the day the House Insurance Committee voted out Senate Bill 1280, which may come to the House floor for a possible vote next week.

The Senate defeated an amendment 35-12 that would have delayed the phase-out for three years rather than six.

In addition to the phase-out delay, the bill also includes a provision requiring that year-end fund surpluses be used to calculate the Mcare assessment for the following year.
