DSM-V Ready for Field Testing

Revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the nation’s leading manual on mental health disorders, are ready to be field-tested.

More than 8,500 comments were received on the DSM-V, the fifth revision of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) manual.

During field trials that will take place through February 2011, clinicians will judge the feasibility, clinical utility, reliability, and validity of the DSM-V’s draft criteria.

The final DSM-V is expected to be released in May 2013.

Some changes so far include reclassification of opioid dependence as an opioid-use disorder, improved criteria for eating disorders, new categorization of learning disorders, and tools to help physicians identify patients at risk of suicide.
