A recent security breach by the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) demonstrates why physicians should consider not using their Social Security number (SSN) as their tax ID number.
Instead, physicians—even solo practitioners—can apply for an employer identification number (EIN) through the IRS.
Apply online or visit the nearest IRS office or the IRS website for a mail application (federal form SS-4). Instructions on completing the application also are available online. You also can call the IRS at (800) TAX-1040 or (800) TAX-FORM for more information.
There is no charge to apply for an EIN.
An EIN will be issued immediately for those who apply online. Those who apply by mail must allow four to five weeks for processing.
If switching to an EIN, make sure to update your National Provider Identifier (NPI) status, complete an updated Medicare enrollment, update any electronic billing forms, and notify insurers of the change.
