The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently published “A Roadmap for New Physicians: Avoiding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse.” It was created to help educate all providers, regardless of specialty or practice setting, about fraud and abuse laws.
An OIG survey found that 92 percent of medical school deans and 90 percent of designated school officials were in favor of OIG providing educational materials on the topic.
The publication summarizes the five main federal fraud and abuse laws and identifies several red flags that could indicate a potential liability. It also educates providers on how to best comply with these laws in their relationships with payers, colleagues, and vendors.
The OIG also created a PowerPoint presentation that providers can use to teach others at their practices about fraud and abuse, as well as speaker notes to accompany the presentation.
