AMA Alliance Launches Online Magazine Aimed at Physician Family Life

On June 6, 2014, at the American Medical Association’s (AMA’s) Annual Meeting in Chicago, the AMA Alliance launched a new quarterly online magazine, “Physician Family,” to help physicians face challenges unique to medical families.

The publication has a strong Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) connection. The editor, Donna Baver Rovito, is the wife of a Pennsylvania surgeon, Peter Rovito, MD, and has been outspoken about legislative and political issues that impact physicians for many years. She served as president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance (PMSA) from 2011 to 2012.

The inaugural issue includes an interview with PAMED lobbyist David Thompson, whose wife is an OB/GYN. Two other articles in the inaugural issue are also by authors with a PAMED connection. “The Doctor is OUT” was written by PAMPAC Board member and current PMSA President Cindy Richards, and “New Faces of Medical Families” was written by PMSA board member Matthew Balazik. The magazine will be published online in January, April, July, and October, and is linked to a website, weekly blog, and social media. According to Rovito, “How do we handle our huge medical school debt? How do I explain why Mommy and Daddy can’t make it to school events? How do I handle people who think we’ve ‘got it made’ because I’m married to a doctor? …..There has never before been a resource specifically designed to help meet those challenges and answer the questions that people who don’t share a roof with a doctor don’t fully comprehend.”
