Alliance Medical Education Scholarship (AMES) Fund
The Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance established the Alliance Medical Education Scholarship (AMES) Fund in April 2000 to financially assist deserving medical students enrolled in an accredited Pennsylvania allopathic or osteopathic school. The AMES Fund is supported by Alliance fundraising events and general and memorial contributions.

The first scholarship—named the Robert and Arlene Oyler Award of the Alliance Medical Education Scholarship Fund in the amount of $3,000—is in tribute to Robert D. and Arlene Oyler.

Robert, husband of the Alliance’s former Executive Director Arlene, expressed a keen interest in medicine and was most supportive of the Alliance. He possessed a deep compassion for his physicians. Robert will be remembered affectionately as a very special friend to the Alliance. Arlene’s dedication and long time service to this Alliance are recognized across the state and throughout the country.

The second scholarship to be awarded annually in the amount of $2,500 is presented by William J. West, Jr., MD, a former trustee of the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Board of Trustees. This West Scholarship recognizes three generations of Medical and Alliance leadership, noting these leaders held numerous positions at the county, state, and national levels of our medical and alliance organizations. This Scholarship is being presented in memory of his grandfather William B. West, MD, who served as the 1965-66 President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and in honor of his father William J. West, MD, who served as a member of the Board of Directors, Keystone Peer Review Organization, and in honor of his mother Joyce West, who served as the l984-85 President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Alliance.

AMES Fund applications will be accepted until Feb. 28 from current second and third-year students who are Pennsylvania residents enrolled full time in accredited Pennsylvania allopathic or osteopathic medical schools.

The formal presentation of the scholarships, in the amount of $2,500 each, are made at the Alliance’s annual fundraiser in Hershey, PA.
