Organizations Come Together to Educate Providers on Concussion Screening and Treatment

On Aug. 5, 2014, representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society (PATS) came to the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED) to share information about a recent grant awarded to PATS to support the revision of a program which educates physicians and other health care providers on concussion screening and treatment

At the meeting, both DOH and PATS expressed their desire work with PAMED on updating the curriculum and helping distribute it to all physicians across the state. We will be forming a task force of the PAMED Specialty Leadership Conference to advise the project.

Legislation that provides better monitoring of concussions in Pennsylvania’s interscholastic athletes was signed into law by Gov. Corbett on Nov. 9, 2011, and took effect July 1, 2012.

With the start of the school year fast approaching, physicians in many specialties know that questions about concussions will soon come their way. Here’s some information you might find helpful in answering your patients’ questions.
