Legislation was recently introduced in the state Senate and House that, if passed, would eliminate the current requirement that certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs) in Pennsylvania collaborate with a physician to diagnose, treat, and prescribe drugs to patients.

Some nurse practitioners say they are more likely to practice in rural areas and provide care to underserved communities. However, geomapping studies of nurse practitioner practice patterns indicate that is not the case: they are more likely to practice in urban areas.
